How much does family health insurance cost in Florida?
Family health insurance in Florida is priced person by person. In 2026 the average benchmark silver plan cost $683 a month for one 40-year-old before subsidies, so two parents that age average about $1,366 before adding children. Marketplace plans charge for at most three children under 21. Employer family coverage averaged $26,993 a year in 2025. A family of four earning above $132,000 gets no subsidy. Source: KFF
Why pricing a family plan in Florida is so confusing
- Your family renewal went up and you can't tell whose premium drove it.
- Your job covers you affordably, but adding your spouse and kids costs more than your car payment.
- One of you has a health condition and the other three are healthy.
- A child just turned 19 or is about to turn 26, and you don't know where they go next.
- You're self-employed, so there's no employer plan and your income moves every year.
- You've heard of Florida KidCare but don't know if your children qualify.
How Emily helps your family find the right price
- The whole household, priced. Private PPO quotes for everyone's ages and your ZIP, not a national average.
- Split the family when it's cheaper. Sometimes parents fit a private PPO while children belong on KidCare or an ACA plan. Emily lays out each combination.
- Honest about ACA plans. Emily only sells private PPO plans. If someone in your family has a pre-existing condition or your income qualifies for a big subsidy, she'll say so and point you to HealthCare.gov or a navigator.
- Pediatricians and prescriptions checked first. Before you apply, for every family member.
- In English or Spanish. With the whole family on the call if you want.
- A fresh look every year. Kids grow, incomes change, plans change. See Emily's family plans.

How is a family health insurance premium calculated?
On an ACA Marketplace plan there is no single "family price". The insurer adds a separate premium for each adult aged 21 or older, then a premium for up to three children under 21; a fourth or fifth young child adds nothing. Children's premiums stay the same up to age 14 and rise after that. Source: KFF
That is why the per-person averages matter. In 2026, the average Florida benchmark silver plan cost $683 a month for a 40-year-old, up from $515 in 2025, and the cheapest bronze averaged $505. Older parents pay more; county and tobacco use change the price too. Source: KFF
Subsidies follow household income. For 2027 coverage, premium tax credits stop at 400% of the 2026 poverty guideline: $33,000 for a family of four, so the line is $132,000 a year. Source: HHS ASPE Above it, the family pays the full premium. Private PPO plans are priced differently: by each person's age, location and health answers, not income. Full Florida price guide.
Is your employer's family plan really the cheapest option?
Often, but not always. In 2025 the average employer family plan cost $26,993 a year, 6% more than in 2024, and workers paid $6,850 of it on average. Source: KFF Employer Health Benefits Survey If your employer pays less toward family coverage than average, your share can be much higher.
The "family glitch" fix helps here. For your spouse and children, HealthCare.gov now measures whether the job plan is affordable using the premium to cover the whole household, not just you. The line is 9.96% of household income for 2026 and 10.22% for 2027. If your own coverage is affordable but the family's isn't, your family members may qualify for Marketplace savings while you stay on the job plan. Source: HealthCare.gov
If you're leaving the job, the whole bill becomes yours. Losing employer coverage. Self-employed with a family? Plans for the self-employed.
What are the options for children: KidCare and staying on until 26?
Florida KidCare is the state's health coverage program for children under 19. What you pay depends on your household size and income; many families pay little or nothing, and families who earn too much for help can buy in at full price. You can apply any time of year. Source: Florida KidCare
Older children can stay on a parent's plan until 26. On a job-based plan that holds even if they marry, move out, aren't your tax dependent or turn down their own job offer. On a Marketplace plan, coverage can last through December 31 of the year they turn 26, usually as your tax dependent. Source: HealthCare.gov
This is why the cheapest answer is sometimes two plans, not one: parents on a private PPO, children on KidCare or a Marketplace plan. Emily compares the private side; the public options are run by the state and HealthCare.gov, and she'll point you to them when they fit better. PPO vs HMO for families.
