Guide

Losing your work coverage? Here's what to do.

Leaving a job, a layoff or a change in hours can end your health insurance. You have options, and a limited window to use them.

You likely qualify for a special enrollment period

Losing employer coverage is a qualifying life event. You can generally enroll in a marketplace plan within 60 days of losing coverage, and in many cases you can apply up to 60 days before it ends.

COBRA or a new plan?

COBRA lets you keep your employer's plan, but you usually pay the full cost yourself. If you're in good health, a private plan may cost less. Emily's team compares COBRA with private options using real numbers.

Don't wait

If the window closes, you may have to wait until the next Open Enrollment. Reach out as soon as you know your coverage is ending.
